132. Lips

Human lips have a reddish color because of the great concentration of tiny capillaries just below the skin. The blood in these capillaries is normally highly oxygenated and therefore quite red. This explains why the lips appear pale when a person is anemic or has lost a great deal of blood. It also explains why the lips turn blue in very cold weather. Cold causes the capillaries to constrict, and the blood loses oxygen and changes to a darker color.

131. Dangerous Monday

Monday is the day of the week when the risk of heart attack is the greatest. Yet another reason to loathe Mondays! A 10 year study  in Scotland found that 20% more people die of heart attacks on Mondays than any other day of the week. Researchers theorize that it’s a combination of too much fun over the weekend with the stress of going back to work that causes the increase.

130. Iron

Your body has enough iron in it to make a nail 3 inches long. Anyone who has ever tasted blood knows that it has a slightly metallic taste. This is due to the high levels of iron in the blood. If you were to take all of this iron out of the body, you’d have enough to make a small nail and very severe anemia.

129. Migraines

Women who are prone to migraines tend to have a higher sex drive than those who are not.

128. A disease can slow down or even prevent puberty

Kallmann syndrome or Kallmann’s syndrome is a dysfunction of the endocrine system. The hypothalamus fails to produce Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), so your body doesn’t develop secondary sexual characteristics. These would include vocal changes, pubic hair and other body hair, enlargement of the genitals, development of breasts for women, and redistribution of muscle tissue for men.

Left untreated, people with Kallmann’s syndrome will be infertile. Treatment involves using hormone replacement therapy to induce puberty artificially. Even with treatment, Kallmann’s syndrome sufferers tend to lose their ability to smell.

127. Premature ejaculation

Over 30% of men suffer from premature ejaculation. 10% of men are affected by erectile dysfunction. That is more than 1/3 of the whole male population.

126. sneeze when exposed to bright light!

This condition, known as the photic sneeze reflex, is sometimes referred to as “Autosomal-dominant Compelling Helioophthalmic Outburst Syndrome” (ACHOO Syndrome). The first known mention of this disorder was made back in Ancient Greece by the philosopher Aristotle, who wrote, “Why does the heat of the sun on the nose provoke sneezing?”

Several centuries later, we are still trying to figure out the mechanism that causes this strange reflex. Sneezes are normally triggered by an irritation in the nose that is detected by the trigeminal nerve. This nerve is rather close to the optic nerve, which senses visual stimuli such as a sudden burst of light from the sun. Scientists believe that when the optic nerve sends an impulse telling the brain to close the eyelids due to bright light, some of the electrical signal is picked up by the trigeminal nerve and mistaken for nasal irritation! Test it and find out - I know that I personally have always wondered why I had this reflex, but it’s kind of fun to be able to make yourself sneeze on comman.
